Experience the Glow: Bioluminescence in Florida’s Waters

From June to October, the waters of Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, and Indian River Lagoon come alive with bioluminescence, a breathtaking natural phenomenon where tiny organisms emit light, creating a mesmerizing glow in the water.

These glowing particles are trillions of dinoflagellate plankton that light up when disturbed, making for an unforgettable kayaking experience.

A bioluminescent kayak tour in Florida had been on my bucket list for a while, so I was thrilled to book an experience with Get Up and Go Kayaking. Known for their clear kayaks, they offer an unparalleled view of the glowing waters beneath you.

We arrived at Indian River Lagoon just before 10 PM, met our tour guides, and suited up with life jackets. Our group consisted of 14 people and two guides, making for a cozy yet exciting adventure. One by one, we launched into the dark waters, eager to witness the magic firsthand.

What to Expect on a Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour

The Importance of Darkness: Choosing the Right Night

People preparing kayaks by a dark, moonlit lake. Neon lights around necks, red reflections on the water create a vibrant, mysterious mood.

Once on the water, we quickly realized just how dark it was. We intentionally picked a night with a new moon, ensuring the sky was as dark as possible for optimal visibility of the glowing plankton. If you're planning your trip, choosing a night with minimal moonlight will enhance your experience.

To capture the glow, I brought my professional camera, even though it wasn’t waterproof. I adjusted the settings by increasing the ISO, which made the shots grainier but showcased the bioluminescence much closer to how we saw it with the naked eye.

Bioluminescent Hotspots & Highlights of the Tour

  1. Learning About the Plankton

Our guides, Jacob and Jason, took us to our first stop, where they shared fascinating facts about bioluminescent plankton and how they create their glow.

  1. Unexpected Dolphin Encounter

As we continued paddling, we were lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming nearby! Seeing these majestic creatures in the glowing water added an extra layer of magic to our adventure.

  1. Kennedy Space Center Views

Dark seascape with distant vertical light beam on horizon; scattered clouds and faint city lights glow, reflecting mood of mystery.

From a distance, we saw Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39B and the Vehicle Assembly Building, which provided a unique contrast between the natural glow of the water and the artificial lights of space exploration.

  1. The Ultimate Bioluminescent Experience: Algae Hotspot

Kayakers with glowing paddles on dark water. Green and blue lights create a mysterious, serene ambiance against a dim horizon.

Our final stop was at a known bioluminescent hotspot, where the algae were at their brightest. The glow intensified as we splashed around and used a net to agitate the water.

Paddling as fast as possible created a brilliant blue-green trail behind our kayaks, making us feel like we were in a scene from Avatar.

Tips for an Unforgettable Bioluminescent Kayaking Adventure

If you’re planning to experience bioluminescent kayaking in Florida, here are some essential tips to make the most of your adventure:

When is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence in Florida?

  • Peak season: July and August offer the brightest glow.

  • Ideal conditions: A new moon or minimal moonlight ensures the best visibility.

  • Best locations: The Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon, and Banana River are the top bioluminescent hotspots.

What Should You Bring for a Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour?

  • Bug spray – Mosquito Lagoon lives up to its name! Opt for a DEET-free repellent if you're using a clear kayak.

  • Long sleeves & pants – Protect yourself from the biting insects.

  • Waterproof phone case or camera gear – The glow is hard to capture, but a camera with high ISO settings will help.

Are Clear Kayaks Worth It for a Bioluminescent Tour?

Yes! Clear kayaks enhance the experience by allowing you to see the glowing algae beneath you. However, they can feel less stable than traditional kayaks, so be prepared for a different paddling experience.

How Long is a Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour?

Most tours last about 90 minutes, with some upstream paddling required on the way back. While not overly strenuous, be prepared for a bit of a workout!
